Talking Civil partnerships in Australia

Hello!

I am an Australian living in the UK. I have entered into a civil partnership however my partner and I have decided to move to Australia. We have submitted the applications but as gay marriage is deemed illegal in Australia we are entering as a de-facto migration Visa.

I don't really have any questions about the process however I was wondering if there is any British people who have done something similar. Basically it seems to be such a money grabbing process by the Australian government. The actual application costs £1000 to submit and then on top of it there is £300 of doctor appointments for fitness and blood tests and then another £100 for a police certificate.

I understand Australia needs to protect it's value etc etc but come on, Britain shares many of the same values in society...it just seems such a ridiculous process.

I will finish off my rant by asking if there is anyone out there who has done something similar what was your experience in terms of processing times. They see 3 to 4 months but with the amount of money paid you'd think they'd speed up the process a little.

Looking forward to coming come

=-D

That's really funny. I just assumed that category meant civil partnership. Here in liberal California they have banned gay marriage. I think it is a slap in the face to all the hard work that many people have done and I don't see it changing. When you get out of the city, gay bashing, being on the down low, and whatever else you can think of is very accepted. The U.S. is extremely schizo. They don't know what they want and yet surprisingly they make people think there is an actual plan.

I wish you well. I thought that Australia was accepting of gay people? Or is it just the marriage issue? It doesn't really make sense why Iowa would allow marriages of all the places in this country, it is no longer a moral issue it is economic as well.

It's not that Australians as people are not accepting it's the ridiculous *I will bite my tongue before I offend someone* people who run the country.

It does seem really silly that the UK has civil partnerships but Australia does not. If oyu have ever been to Sydney or Melbourne there is such a large gay and lesbian influence on society yet the morons in Canberra decide to live in the 1700's.

Anyway, don't want to get too political here, it just seems that such an amazing country with a forward thinking society can have such brain dead politicians. *Sigh* Religion and media....

Hello arabib,

Every time I get a job whether it's paid employment or voluntary work, I go through this process of obtaining a police check. For some people it takes 3 months waiting on the check before they can begin to work. For me it took 1 month the last time (probably because I did not commit any offence in that time). I think it's a good thing for Australia but frustrating for people waiting to get to work. The police have the upper hand in protecting all of us by doing things this way. It's a case of better safe than sorry, I think.
