Hi,

Do I need to take a written and/or practical driving test to drive in Perth or can I keep using my UK license?

I passed my UK test after three attempts and heaps of lessons and I am dreading the thought of having to sit another driving test.

You are allowed to drive for 3 month on a full UK licence. After that you will need to apply for a WA licence. Good news is that there are no driving tests - it's just an eye test and an application form with fee and relevant documentation presented to a licensing centre.

To transfer your overseas driver licence you must personally attend a licensing centre (payment by Cash, Cheque, EFTPOS or credit card) or a licensing agent (payment by Cash or Cheque only) between the hours of 8:15 am and 3:45 pm Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).

When attending a licensing centre or agent to transfer your licence you must take the following documentation with you:

* your current overseas drivers licence.

* proof of your identity, one primary document and one secondary document (originals only).

* proof of your WA residential address.

* one document that shows your signature.

* You must also pay an application fee of $ 36.20 together with the standard $ 36.60 (1 year) or $ 116.00 (5 year) licence fee.

Cash, cheque, EFTPOS and credit cards are accepted.
* You will be required to have your photo taken which will be displayed on your new Western Australian licence.

That's great news !!:):)

Also, do you know where I could get info on speed limits and any special road rules?

Speed Limits in Western Australia:

40 km per hour speed limit applies around schools at the start & end of the school day.
50 km per hour speed limit applies in most suburban streets in towns & cities.
60 km per hour speed limit on major metropolitan arterial roads.
70 or 80km per hour on dual carriageways.
100 0r 110 km speed limit applies on most open roads and freeways.

Speeding is very much frowned upon in WA and there are well-hidden cameras that are frequently moved to catch speeding traffic. Fines start at $75 and you will also get demerit points on your driving licence.

Best advice is to stay within the speed limit.:)
