Hello,

I'm going to be in Australia soon for a year on a working holiday visa. Can anyone advise me on the best mobile phone network to choose? I'm planning on touring Queensland for a couple of months and then looking for work. Which is the best mobile network to use as I need to have a mobile phone that is reliable?

Thanks for any replies

Megan

Telstra has the best coverage but they're also the most expensive. Telstra claims to have 99% coverage through its 3G service. They've a map page on their website showing coverage http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/networks/coverage/maps.cfm. The other big providers are Optus and Vodaphone. Vodaphone also have a map with coverage details http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/services/coverage/maps/index.htm.

You would be best with a prepaid phone as most contracts are for 24 months. Telstra next G phones start at around $90. There are several compare websites that could help you decide http://www.phonechoice.com.au/ or http://www.mobiles.com.au/.

If you are plannning to stay within Queensland CBD then its ok to get an Optus or Three service sim for your phone. Depending on how much calls/sms you make both network providers offers different cap plans, so I would advise to check for yourself.

Although Telstra has the widest coverage, its only going to make a difference if you travel in country areas where optus and three has less/no coverage at all.

Other thing is if you are planning to make overseas calls then you can weigh your choices between optus and three.

The link provided by Sam for Telstra Coverage Map will guide you depending on where you are actually be staying/travelling.
