Wow, interesting. How do I find out how fast my broadband is? I'd like to compare it with the average for WA.

You can find out by visiting a speed test website: http://www.speedtest.net/

Interesting to see Tasmania coming out on top. You often get the impresssion that it's a bit of a backwater compared with the other parts of the country. Presumably these figures are only for pure broadband and anyone with a cable connection will be a lot faster?

I'm quite impressed by the speeds shown. Who are the main internet providers in Australia?

There are some broadband blackspots in Adelaide thanks partly to a lack of planning in some new suburbs. So check out your internet access if you are renting/ buying in Adelaide.

The internet in Australia is rather poor. The Main providers are BigPond, TPG and Optus Their are allot more that you can subscribe to so there is no shortage of competition it seems.
For around about $100 on Telstra You will be able to get 25GBs after you go over this your speed will be slowed to 64kbs:mad:. For the same amount on TPG you Will get 100Gbs later slowed to 512kbs; it will pay if you shop around a little bit, Bigpond however has a massive advantage over everybody coverage they provide for the whole of Australia
As you can see I have showed you the cheapest and the most expensive; so do shop around in Australia.
TPG (http://www.tpg.com.au/products_services/adsl2plus_pricing.php)
BigPond (http://bigpond.com)
Optus (http://www.optus.com.au)

I'm wondering if anyone knows how these numbers are computed. Is it just on average speed or was it a controlled experiment, etc? Surely everyone within any state is not going to have the same speed.

Yes, it's just an average. If you choose the right ISP and you live close to an exchange, you can get much faster than these averages.
We're with Internode. Here are the results of a speed survey they did:
So how does ADSL2+ perform in the real world?
Hence, in December 2006 we took a random sample 7,305 Internode ExtremeŽ ADSL2+ broadband services. Each service was connected to an Internode DSLAM and using the ADSL2+ protocol (G992.5 Annex A ADSL2+ over POTS). We found the following distribution:
* 13.4% achieve a download synch speed of higher than 20 Mbps
* 27.7% achieve a download synch speed of between 15 Mbps and 20 Mbps
* 22.1% achieve a download synch speed of between 10 Mbps and 15 Mbps
* 23.0% achieve a download synch speed of between 5 Mbps and 10 Mbps
* 13.8% achieve a download synch speed of less than 5 Mbps
So over 63% of these customers are achieving 10 Mbps download synch speed or better.
