We'd like to rent a furnished flat for our first few months in Sydney (mum, dad and 4 year old daughter.) Are these easy to find? How much would it cost for a 2 bedroom flat in a decent area with good primary schools?

Furnished rentals will be a lot more expensive than unfurnished as you will be living in 'holiday' accommodation. Long term rentals are unfurnished and you would probably want to move into a long term (12 month lease) unfurnished quite quickly. If you are looking for furnished rentals then check out http://www.apartmentservice.com.au/. They have lots of furnished property but it is pricey.
As far as area goes I would recommend, if you are happy with a commute of about 45 mins to CBD , places like Killarney Heights, Forestville, Frenchs Forest etc They are great family areas and only 15 minutes from the beaches & bush. I suggest you have a look on realestate.com.au and www.domain.com.au to see what is available. Also you can have a look at street view on google which will give an idea of what the street/area is like before you arrive.
There are plenty of good state primary schools in the area and Killara High, a state high school has an excellent reputation.

Unfurnished is far cheaper and the norm for 12 month leases. I think you will find it difficult to get a long term furnished rental.
