Car shipping UK to Australia Quotes/Recommendations?

I'm seriously thinking about shipping my car to Australia. So instead of taking a loss on selling my car in the UK and then paying for a car again in Australia, we'd buy a small cheap runaround when we arrive Australia, which we'll keep anyway, and ship my own. (It cost us £35,000 a year ago and selling it for about £25,000 or less would hurt!)

Has anyone out there shipped a car to Australia? If you have, can you recommend a shipping company for a car from the UK to Melbourne? What sort of costs would you predict for shipping a large family car? Do you think shipping a car to Australia is a good idea?

Unless you really love you car it's not worth it.
If you have a more expensive car then there is an extra tax to pay, luxury car tax (LCT) which is set at 33% above the threshold - currently $57180

It works like this:

An example of how the LCT is applied is shown below:

Customs Value= $50,000.00

Customs Duty = 10% x CV= 0.10 x 50,000= $5,000.00

T&I (transport & Insurance) = $4,500.00

VoTI (CV+Duty+T&I)= 50,000+5,000+4,500=$59,500.00

GST = 10% x VoTI= 0.10 x 59,500=$5,950.00

Sub Total = GST + VoTI= 5,950 + 59,500=$65,450.00

Remainder = Sub Total - LCT Threshold= 65,450 - 57,180=$8,270.00

LCT Payable = Remainder x 10/11 x 0.33= 8,270 x 10/11 x 0.33=$2,481.00

TOTAL TAXES PAYABLE (Duty + GST + LCT)= 5,000 +5,950 + 2,481.00=$13,431.00

And that is just the taxes!!

My advice is similar to Sam's - that the taxes and duty payable will not make it worthwhile. Be wary of shipping companies that give the impression that it is a straightforward process and will cost a couple of thousand pounds. There are a lot of 'extra' payments and lots of paperwork is involved.

You could try karmanshipping for a quote http://www.karmanshipping.co.uk/australia/australia.html. I've not used them myself, but they have a good website with lots of information and prices.

"# A guide to the costs would be £1,300–£1,400 shipping, £100–£300 shipment protection, A$2,250–A$2,750 in Australia excluding taxes, annual registration and insurance.

# Procedure:

1. Read our website
2. Contact us for a written quotation
3. Decide to ship a car
4. Send to us a completed shipping and liability form and send to Canberra a completed personal import approval application form
5. We arrange the export and our costs are settled
6. Canberra/DoTaRS issues an import approval
7. The car is handed to us and we ship it to Australia
8. We send the shipping papers to you after the ship has sailed
9. Shipping papers are put together with the import approval and all your car papers for the authorities when the car arrives
10. An Agent can assist with the importation at destination
11. Obtain a valuation when the car arrives
12. Pay the import taxes
13. The car is collected and then made roadworthy and registered."
