Does anyone have information about the costs to ship a 40 foot container from the UK to Australia? Ideally landing in Melbourne but it doesn't matter too much if it it lands in another port if it works out cheaper overall and doesn't take very much longer.
Ideally I'd like to get the container delivered to our house, pack it ourselves and then get it taken away and have it delivered to our chosen location in Australia. Is this possible and if it is, how much would it cost roughly?

I would recommend that you get lots of quotes – as the prices can be very variable- I think everyone is keen for business these days but my experience is that once they have given you a price then that is that and they will not negotiate further on it.
Also remember that there is insurance to add on too – different companies have different rates.

For a 40'' container you will be looking at £5000 - £7000. Definitely get several quotes from the likes of John Masons, Anglo Pacific, Crown, Allied Pickfords etc. It is worth the hassle.
Do you think you could get by with a 20'' container? It will reduce the cost considerably.

You can also get the price down by packing the container yourself - but this can be stressful and you would need to be very organised. You are only going to be allowed 3 -4hours to pack the container before you will be charged more.
Also I'm not sure if you would be eligible for insurance if you packed yourself.

If you could manage with a 20" container then the cost would be around £3000.
