Diesel cars in Australia?

Australia Or Bust
29th September 2009, 12:00 AM
I recently got a company car. Against my wishes it was a diesel. Funnily enough I love it now and the fuel economy is amazing. Are there plenty of diesel cars to choose from in Australia or are all the cars all petrol and you only get diesel if you buy a van?

If you want a diesel car then you’re best bet is a station wagon. It’s much rarer to find a diesel saloon or hatchback cars and you’ll be very restricted on choice.

Diesel station wagons are common. There are plenty of diesel utes/vans and 4WD’s.

The main car site is drive.com.au.

You will have plenty choice in station wagons as it is common for these cars to be diesel - bit trickier for saloons and hatchbacks but a few are out there.

Audi are extending their diesel range and now have a diesel sports car in Aus. Not tried it myself (!), but it is exempt from luxury car tax (because of the efficient engine). Cost $71,000 ish.

For info:

The Luxuary Car Tax threshold is currently AUD$57,180. However, an increased threshold of AUD$75,000 applies to fuel efficient cars that have a combined fuel consumption rating not exceeding 7 litres per 100 kilometres.

LCT is charged at 33% of the GST exclusive car price that exceeds the threshold.

LCT is not charged on private sales.
