Hi,
I have some queries about dentists in Australia. Does anyone know how much it costs to see a dentist and have a filling or a check up? Is it covered by medicare or is it separate?
I've recently been to the dentist in the UK and it cost me £60 to have a white filling. It must have taken my dentist all of 10 minutes to do.
I don't expect that the fees will be any better in Aus but I would like to have some idea.
Help please??

Hi,
Yes dental bills can be expensive in Australia. For primary children there is school dental care and a yearly check up is free. The school dentist will fill teeth but there will be a charge for this.
To give an idea of the cost of dental work here are a few prices from Noble dentists – this is a chain of dentists all over Australia. You pay yearly membership ($150 approx for a family) and receive reduced dental bills.
Check up $43
Metal filling $84
2 metal fillings $104
white filling $94 (front tooth)
white filling $103 (back tooth)
full crown $1051
x ray $33
Hope this helps to reassure you. These prices are for Adelaide. Full list here: http://www.nobledentist.com.au/dentist_dental_fee_price_cost.php#Adelaide At the top of the page are further links so that you can find dental costs for Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne or Perth.

My daughter has braces and I dread to think what the cost would be if she had private treatment. Under the NHS the treatment has all been free!!
It's definitely a cost we will have to budget for in the future - higher dental bills for the family.

I recently had some fillings (white) to replace the metal, which can damage your teeth and a cap.
The fillings were about $250 (USD) each without insurance.
The cap was about $1300 (USD) without insurance.
The xrays were over $100 (USD), but I decided to have the full mouth series.
The cleaning is around $100 (USD) also.
This was my dentist who is in Southern California and is very thorough, but the prices are a little higher than I would like.

You can take out insurance for dental work either on its own or as part of a package with medical insurance.
Latrobe, for example, allows for separate dental cover and is $40 a month for a family. There are maximum limits on the policy though, which are not very generous. It's probably worth hunting around to find a better dental plan.http://www.latrobehealth.com.au/HealthCover/Family/ExtrasCover/Default/#family_D
Noble dentist are Australia wide and not too bad for prices. Fairly small yearly fee and reduced rates for any dental work needed.

I visited the dentist in York yesterday. A full crown on a back molar cost £390 and a white filling cost £60 - both carried out privately, not on the NHS.

If you want to use a Nobeldentist in Adelaide I only know of one dentist Dr David Potter in Felixstow. My friend has just had some treatment: a check-up, a white filling and some x-rays and the bill was less than $200. She was very impressed with the service.
