On the budget front again, where should I be looking for the best deal for a mobile phone in Melbourne? (I tend do use my mobile more for talking than for texting. The phone would be used mainly for national calls. I'll use a landline for most of my international calls.

There's a lot to choose from. Telstra have the best coverage but are expensive. If you are going to be in the cities, then you will have a lot of choice.

Exetel has been recommended to me http://www.exetel.com.au/mobile_plans_capped.php which starts at $10.00 a month for $75.00 of calls. International calls are not included in the cap, so you would be best to make them from your landline. Plus there is a no minimum contract time. :)

I'm in Melbourne with 3G and I pay $29 a month for $310 of calls ($100 international calls included).

Calls to the UK: the flagfall (connection charge) is 40c with 40c per 30 seconds to UK landlines, 40c flagfall with 75c per 30 seconds to UK mobiles.

Check when you choose a plan that international calls are included in the cap as they often are not.
