Can you watch British television in Australia?

I know there are some British programmes on Australian TV but what I'd like to know is if you can get everthing on satellite. Can you sit and watch BBC1, BBC2, ITV and the rest of them as channels in Australia? The BBCi player is good but I think it only works if your in the UK.

As far as I know, there's no satellite delivery of UK channels in Australia.

You could look into http://uk.slingmedia.com/. This is a box that connects your TV in Australia to a TV in the UK - say your parent's or a good friend's Freeview box or Sky box. The connection is over the internet, so you'll want fast internet connections at both ends.

You can watch and change channels from Australia, but if anyone is watching in the UK at the time, you'll annoy them because it'll change their channel too. You should really only watch it when your hosts in the UK are asleep or out at work.

Very interested in this Richard. I don't watch a lot of telly, especially here, the ads drive me up the wall. Watching some BBC would make a nice change. Is this box legal or is it dodgy, like file sharing?

According to the entry in Wikipedia "To avoid copyright infringement, only one user can access the stream from a Slingbox at a time."

That sounds like its true if each viewer is in the same country. What if you're watching a programme in Australia but the BBC has only bought the rights to show it in the UK? I think that would be a copyright infringement.

It could also be a copyright problem but I've heard that it should work if you use an internet proxy site in the UK to watch the BBCi player. You appear on the internet as if your in the UK.

Thanks jimjams. I tried using a proxy once but I couldn't get it to work.

Thanks Richard and platypus. It looks like the copyright situation is a little iffy. Probably not iffy enough to stop me taking it a stage or two further though. ;)
