Hi all,

I'm currently working as a GP in Reading, Berks in the SE of England. I'm thinking about moving to Australia and, in the middle of looking for some information, I saw an invitation to ask a question here. So here I am.

My question is about salary levels. My salary right now is over £100,000 (yes, I know I'm lucky) and I'm wondering if a GP can earn at a similar level in Australia.

I would say from $200,000 +. Have a look at mycarrer.com.au. It gives you an idea of the average salaries of doctors.

Thanks for the info Fran. What unusual figures.

Apr - Jun 2008 $161,791.44
Jul - Sep 2008 $220,102.25
Oct - Dec 2008 $156,199.10
Jan - Mar 2009 $226,538.09

At first sight it almost looks like doctors are paid seasonally. I assume they're basing their salary figures on a small sample of doctors' salaries. It does look like I should be able to earn a similar income in Australia to the UK, so that's good. Thanks again for your help.

If you are planning on coning to Queensland, then the pay may be a bit disappointing. A new pay agreement is being agreed and a senior doctor's basic pay is quoted at $108,710.

"The new agreement, which has received in-principle support from the Queensland Public Sector Union, would leave a senior registrar - a doctor who has been out of high school at least 14 years - earning a base deal of $108,710.

The same doctors are better paid in every other state according to various industrial agreements. "

Emergency doctors in NSW have recently agreed a new pay deal and the salaries look very attractive:

Base salaries of senior emergency doctors

Western Australia: $296,594

NSW: $302,517

Queensland: $344,229

South Australia: $346,752

Tony Sara, NSW president of the Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation, said that last year half the vacancies for trainee emergency doctors were left empty and of those filled many staff were from overseas.

''Large numbers of people in those positions were overseas graduates having a holiday, so they weren't necessarily going to stay in the country. They were going to get trained at our expense and were not going to stay,'' Dr Sara said.

He said the deal was a huge breakthrough that could boost numbers of emergency doctors by 5 to 10 per cent. The effect will not be known until recruitment begins next month.

Hi,

GP salaries can vary depending on where you work and the practice you work for plus how many patients you see etc! Gps are paid on a % of what they bill their patients. I work for a Medical Recruitment Company based in the UK and would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have - emma@headmedical.com
