Costco is opening in Melbourne at Docklands on the 17th August and the membership fee online is $60. Is it worth it? It will probably be absolutely mobbed for the first few weeks as everyone will want to have a look.

I've never paid to get into a shop before…

If you can brave the crowds then have a look. I read that the membership is refundable if you're not entirely satisfied, so if it's not for you then at least you can get you money back.

It could be a big hit with small business that are able to stock up on items in bulk at cheaper prices than the wholesalers.

Personally, I don't consider myself a shopoholic ..... but there are lots of people out there who are.

I can see most people getting back in savings their membership fee on the first visit.

Costco are a bulk seller and you'll make big savings on branded washing powder, dishwasher powder and cleaning stuff. They sell good quality branded items at discounted rates. They also sell bulk, one off stock so you never know quite what to expect – which is part of the attraction.

Over here in the U.S., Costco's are full of great stuff. If you don't mind buying more than you need. The way I look at it if you really like one particular product, you will get a better price overall than if you were to buy it elsewhere. I was not aware they were opening Costco in Australia. I am planning to make the jump soon so it does help when I need to stock up on items I won't have when I get over there.

ENTRY FEE
The unofficial policy is that you can enter for free in the first week, but can't buy anything unless you're a member.
$60 for yearly membership ($55 if you own a business)
One membership pays for two cards used as photo ID's for entry and checkout.
You can bring up to two non-members with each visit but only the member can check out.
Membership is refundable if you are unhappy.

PARKING
Due to bulky items drive in with your BIGGEST car. Park at nearby Harbourtown and walk across. Harbourtown parking is free first hour then $5 for all day.
Official carpark is underneath Costco store - first two hour free then $5 per hour.
Those willing to risk a fine can park for free on the nature strip on the north side of Footscray Road.

SHOPPING & CHECKOUT
The place is massive - give yourself a few hours to shop. Be prepared to wait to pay (no express checkouts), up to an hour at peak times. Queues may be shorter closer to closing time.

Hi Dusty, if you're single and live more than 100kms from Costco, I don't think paying the membership fee is worth it. Grocery prices in Aldi, Coles & woolworths have lowered over the past weeks :)

I think it's worth getting a membership for Costco is you are going to go regularly, say even once a month to buy things in bulk that you need, and save on what you would pay at the supermarket. You would definately get your money's worth.
