Does anyone know which airline has the best baggage allowance to Aus from the UK? We want to take as much with us as possible on the plane so this info will be a deciding factor. Thanks in advance for any help.

The standard allowance is 20kg. I don't know of any carrier that allows more than this but someone else might.

If you have a PR visa, it may be worth phoning the airline you have in mind, as they may grant an extra allowance for you. Give it a try, there is nothing to lose.

One of my mates tells me that if you've got a visa for permanent immigration to Australia, then Singapore Airlines will give you a 40kg one-way allowance. There's no guarantee thats right though. I checked on the website and googled it, but couldn't see any info on the Singapore Airlines site to confirm this. If you're at the ticket booking stage, it would be worthwhile giving them a call to see if they'll do 40kg. That's what we're going to do.
The other way to get a 40kg allowance out of Singapore Airlines is to fly first class. :D

Virgin Blue allow you to buy the baggage as blocks. I have always found them to be cost effective.

Max was asking about UK to Aus flights, not internal Australian flights.

If you want to lose a little weight on the plane then it's worth thinking about the weight of your cases as they can vary quite considerably. Soft canvas cases are much lighter than solid hard ones and you can save precious kilos by buying cheap soft cases. Of course if you have fragile objects in your luggage it may be best to take at least one solid case.
