Australia’s unemployment has fallen to its lowest rate since records began (in 1978).
May’s figure – a seasonally adjusted 4.9 percent – resulted from Australia’s economy adding 56,000 new jobs in May. Nearly all of the jobs were full-time.
New South Wales was the powerhouse of the expansion, with 47,000 of Australia’s new jobs located there.
Australian Bureau of Statistics data released today surprised commentators who had expected 12,500 jobs would have been created in May.
Australia’s male unemployment rate is now 4.8 percent and the female unemployment rate is 5.0 percent.
