April 13th, 2006 | Published in Immigration
In the six months to December 2005 65,804 migrants arrived in Australia – up almost 9 percent on the same period in the previous year.
Europe (mainly the UK) at 24.4 per cent provided most migrants, followed by Oceania (mainly NZ) at 16 per cent.
Other major sources of migrants included Southeast Asia (13.8 per cent), Northeast Asia (11.5 per cent) and Southern Asia (mainly India) at 11.2 per cent.
The UK (18.5 per cent) was the biggest single source of immigrants to Australia. Numbers of British migrants are growing because of an increased focus on skilled trades, although professionals remain by far the largest occupational group.
New South Wales is the most popular state for settler arrivals, with 34.9 per cent of migrants settling there. This is down somewhat on the previous 37.1 percent.
Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia increased their shares of migrants.
