High Schools / Secondary Schools in Adelaide, South Australia

Students begin high school in Year 8.

They are able, if they wish, to leave when they reach the age of 16, provided they continue to undertake some form of education or training, for example an apprenticeship, until age 17.

High school is split into Junior high school: Years 8 – 10 and Senior high school: Years 11 – 12.

Qualifications

Students in Years 11 and 12 aim for a qualification. This are likely to be the SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education), although a number of schools offer the International Baccalaureate.

The SACE has two stages – Stage 1, which most students do in Year 11 and Stage 2, which most students do in Year 12.

To gain the SACE, students must complete enough subjects to earn a minimum of 200 credits.

Students gain 10 credits for each semester (6 months) of study in a particular subject. Students also gain credit for learning outside of school, including vocational training, university studies, community service and some employment.
